Program Highlights & Events:

WSU Master Gardener of the Year for Washington State

Karen Gilliam of Whatcom County

At the recent Master Gardener State Conference in Yakima, Wa. our very own Karen Gilliam of Whatcom County was named State Master Gardener of the Year. Karen has served the local program as a volunteer in every capacity for 41 years. During the 1980s she served as secretary, treasurer, and president of the WSU Whatcom County Master Gardener Foundation. During those same years she helped create the WSU Whatcom Extension demonstration gardens at Hovander Homestead Park. In addition, she has been a mentor to new Master Gardener trainees, a co-chair of the greenhouse committee, the teacher of monthly plant identification courses and numerous community workshops and classes throughout the county.

Each year Karen has donated approximately 1,500 plants to the annual plant sale. All arrive in tip-top shape and accurately labeled. You might think of these as her “green legacy” as these plants have settled in to hundreds of gardens throughout Whatcom county.

Karen become a certified Master Gardener in 1976, and for the past 41 years Karen has met and exceeded all expectations as a WSU Extension volunteer.

She is professional, compassionate, research based, a lifelong learner and above all, patient. In keeping with the mission of Master Gardeners she has expanded our knowledge of the plants we live with and been a model of stewardship.
