This handbook is written for beginning riders, to help them prepare and ride
horses safely. It also includes important information about the horse's senses
and social behavior. Use this handbook in conjunction with the Washington
4-H Horse Advancement program to provide beginning riders with the skills
and knowledge to handle and ride horses safely and competently. EM4714
- Training Horses: Yearling to Five-Year Old
A manual for 4-H members who have a saddle-type horse or foal available to care
for and train. It is designed to help a member select and train a horse to its
maturity. Beginning with a yearling, the requirements are for a five-year progressive
project. For each year of the project there will be a project description, requirements,
and methods showing how to accomplish the requirements.

Everything you need to know about a performance horse project is in this manual:
horse types, gaits, conformation, fitting and showing, grooming, and equitation.
Also includes class rules for different exhibits, divisions, and classes, like

Western Games Member Manual and Class Rules
The purpose of this manual is to provide activities for all Washington State
youth interested in improving their riding skills, basic horsemanship, and horse
husbandry. The project includes guidelines to conduct games, encourage good sportsmanship,
and recognize accomplishments. It also includes the five events most widely accepted
in games competition throughout the Pacific Northwest. The events will be conducted
at any 4-H sanctioned games shows at the county and state level. Many illustrations,
