GBHG Horseless Horse:

  • develop leadership, initiative, self-reliance, sportsmanship, and other desirable traits of character
  • develop an understanding of the responsibilities of managing a horse
  • develop an appreciation of horseback riding as a healthy and wholesome form of recreation
  • learn skill in horsemanship and an understanding of the business of breeding, raising, and training horses
  • increase knowledge of safety precaution to prevent injury to themselves, others, and their mounts
  • promote greater love for animals and a humane attitude toward them

GBHA - Beginning Horsemanship

  • develop an animal care ethic
  • learn to select, care for, feed, and provide for the health of an animal
  • develop organizational skills, including judging and recordkeeping
  • learn to ride, train, and handle a horse safely

EM4842 - Beginning Horsemanship
This handbook is written for beginning riders, to help them prepare and ride horses safely. It also includes important information about the horse's senses and social behavior. Use this handbook in conjunction with the Washington 4-H Horse Advancement program to provide beginning riders with the skills and knowledge to handle and ride horses safely and competently.

EM4714 - Training Horses: Yearling to Five-Year Old
A manual for 4-H members who have a saddle-type horse or foal available to care for and train. It is designed to help a member select and train a horse to its maturity. Beginning with a yearling, the requirements are for a five-year progressive project. For each year of the project there will be a project description, requirements, and methods showing how to accomplish the requirements.

EM4724 - Performance Horse Member Manual
Everything you need to know about a performance horse project is in this manual: horse types, gaits, conformation, fitting and showing, grooming, and equitation. Also includes class rules for different exhibits, divisions, and classes, like hunt seat, stock seat, bareback, trail horse, pleasure, and pony.

EM4610 - Western Games Member Manual and Class Rules
The purpose of this manual is to provide activities for all Washington State youth interested in improving their riding skills, basic horsemanship, and horse husbandry. The project includes guidelines to conduct games, encourage good sportsmanship, and recognize accomplishments. It also includes the five events most widely accepted in games competition throughout the Pacific Northwest. The events will be conducted at any 4-H sanctioned games shows at the county and state level. Many illustrations, diagrams.

EM4881- Harness Driving: Manual and Rules for Washington State
Contents include: appointments, general rules, driving classes, timed driving games, training the driving horse or pony, harness adjustment, harnessing and hitching, driver specifications, driving safety, and references.

EM4715- Horses are Fun
Member Manual. Teaches about horses, breeds, markings, coat colors, gaits, grooming, managing, animal health and safety, equipment, good horsemanship, and how to ride. Illustrated.

These add sheets are to be added to the Record Book in the following order:
4-H Horse Certificate #C0233
Individual Horse Record #C0856
Horse Management Record #C0857
Horse Production Breeding Record #C0858

It is also recommended but not required in the Horse Management record to add income. This can be done at the bottom and top of inside pages. Income would include: premiums and work (any job used to support your horse).
