Facilitating
Development and Adoption of Integrated Pest Management for
the Western Raspberry Fruitworm, Byturus unicolor for
Red Raspberry Production
Two-thirds
of Whatcom County Raspberry growers use Diazinon, an organophosphate
insecticide, to avoid infestations of the raspberry beetle
with no resources to make pest management decisions. The
IPM program has received support from the American
Farmland Trust/EPA Region 10 to facilitate the adoption
of IPM for the raspberry beetle. In collaboration with the Scottish
Crop Research Institute-Dundee Scotland and Washington
State University Department of Entomology, the IPM program
has introduced new monitoring tools for the raspberry beetle.
Adoption of these tools will reduce the reliance on Diazinon
and empower growers to make sound management decisions.
