Symptoms
Infected plants may look the same as healthy plants or be smaller and less vigorous; however, leaves are often malformed and are diffusely mottled, chlorotic, dwarfed and may develop characteristic bright yellow bands along the main veins. In addition, stems, twigs, and branches may exhibit circular, brownish necrotic spots. Younger terminal leaves tend to be strap-shaped and have a mottled pattern (alternating yellowish to greenish stippling). Shoot dieback, stunting, and plant death may eventually occur. Fruit yield and quality are severely depressed.
Life History
The disease is transmitted by the dagger nematode, Xiphinema americanum, which feeds on the roots of infected plants then spreads the virus to healthy plants in a circular pattern at a rate of about 3 feet per year in all directions.
Monitoring
During the spring, check for bushes with shoot dieback or stunting and leaves with chevron or mottled pattern. Send samples to a qualified lab for positive identification of the virus. Tag infected plants.
Management
Infected plants should be removed and destroyed and the soil tested for the presence of nematodes. The soil should be fumigated before replanting with virus-tested clean stock.
