Mt. Baker School District Waste Reduction and Recycling Program

In 1990 the Mt. Baker School district started a waste reduction and recycling program. Through the years, they have saved the school district thousands of dollars, garnered several prestigious awards and have had a postive impact on the environment in Whatcom County.

Becky Phillips (in the red "Mt. Baker" sweatshirt) explains the recycling area:

Food waste from the junior/senior high cafeteria and kitchens are collected in specially marked containers and put into "Gertie" (an old cement mixer, converted to be a tumbling composter) along with any yard trimmings from the grounds department.

Gertie the Regurgitator:

We examine the resulting compost from "Gertie."
