Family: Apiaceae (Umbelliferae)
A biennial with a taproot of distinctive odor. The plant is stiff and hairy, 1 to 3 feet tall. Leaves are divided several times. Flowers grow in a fat-top umbel, often centered by one or several minute, dark purple flowers. A weed introduced about 1900, now grows nearly throughout the U.S. and Canada.
