Carving Concrete Stepping Stones

By Karen Gilliam and Kathy Mitchell

Basics

Wet carving your own concrete stepping stones is easy and rewarding. Design and sketch out your own pattern before beginning to carve for best results. Remember, you can achieve interesting three-dimensional effects that add texture, relief, and form to your design since your stepping stone form is 3 to 4 inches high (depending on the height of your form). Think about how to add a curve to a flower petal or layered effects from top to bottom of your design. Simple patterns, whether abstract or realistic, are easiest for learning carving techniques. As you gain experience and confidence, you can do more intricate designs.
