The Bean Project

WSU Whatcom County Extension

Youth & Community Projects

Youth and Communities can learn a lot and have a lot to offer the Beneficial Bean project.

If you would like to participate as a citizen scientist you will need to be able to grow at least one ten foot row of beans.  Your Extension partners will provide the beans to you and your job is to collect and report data about the growth and yield of your bean crop.

Click here for data collection instructions.

As your learn more about beans we encourage you to think about the following project ideas (and any others you think up):

Innovate

- Create an educational display or give a presentation about your bean project.
- Create recipe that uses your variety of beans and add it to our website.
- Enter a recipe that uses your variety of beans at the fair.

Service

- Collect and share data with Extension professionals about which crops grow successfully where you live.
- Help teach others about the nutritional benefits of beans.
- Learn how to preserve beans for canning efforts  to feed the hungry.
- Plant and tend  in a community garden to support families in your neighborhood.
