Native Plant Garden Revitalization

Through the work of many Master Gardeners, and funding from the Master Gardener Foundation, the Native Plant Garden at Hovander Park in Ferndale received a face-lift during the summer of 2004. The garden, created by Master Gardener Nancy May a few years earlier, was covered in six inches of silt from the winter floods. It now has a slightly new location off to the left and received over 80 new plants. In addition to native ornamental favorites such as Evergreen Huckleberry, Red Flowering Currant and Red Columbine, 27 new bulbs of Fawn Lilies, Tiger Lilies, and Fritillarias were planted.

This work was initiated by two Master Gardeners who received funding from the Master Gardener Foundation, signed up volunteers, organized three work parties, and purchased or salvaged the plants. Rebuilding the fence, removing grass, working in 3 bucket-loaders of compost, planting, pruning and watering was done with the invaluable help of numerous Master Gardeners. Additional contributions from Master Gardeners included new signs for the plants and the donation of a large number of plants for this project. Hovander Park staff supported the efforts by locating and loaning materials.
