Treatments:

M = mowed,
S = Sprayed with 2% Roundup,
SAS = Sprayed with 2% Roundup plus 2% Ammonium sulfate.

Roundup alone, no mowing.

Roundup + 2% Ammonium sulfate

Mowing Plus Roundup after 1 month (approximately)

Mowing Plus Roundup + Ammonium Sulfate after approx. 1 month

TREATMENT TIMELINE

4/13/01:  Mowed paths to define 90 test plots.  The area is not fully uniform but is 80+% Reed Canary Grass. Other grasses appear to be mainly orchard grass.  Very heavy thatch in places.  New growth relatively sparse.  Plots are approximately 25’X 5’.

Mowed plots A 7,8,9 and F 7,8,9 .

4/17/01:  Sprayed J 1,2,3 with 2% Roundup and J 4,5,6 with 2% roundup plus 2% (NH₄)₂SO₄ (AS).  Fairly windy conditions with wind blowing from the South so sprayed on North side of plots.

5/8/01:  J 1,2,3 and J 4,5,6 Most leaves withered a small number of leaves are green, possibly due to growth after spraying.

5/15/01: Mowed pathways and mowed A 1,2,3; C1,2,3 and C 4,5,6. Sprayed E 1,2,3 and  A7,8,9 with Roundup  and F 7,8,9 and E 4,5,6 with Roundup +AS.

6/13:  Mowed D 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and F 7,8,9.
Sprayed A 1,2,3 and B 7,8,9 with Roundup and sprayed a 4,5,6 and C 7,8,9 with Roundup + 2% ammonium sulfate.
Some regrowth in J 1,2,3 and J 4,5,6.

Regrowth in A 1,2,3,4,5,6 approximately 10”, not very lush.
Most of site has is approximately 12-18”, not very vigorous.  West end has strongest growth but none is headed out or showing signs of seed production.  Adjacent areas have ECG to 4+ feet and some in flower.
Sprayed a single strip south of A 1,2,3 and a patch south of A 7,8,9 with Roundup where growth is much more vigorous and some signs of flowering.  7/23  good kill, 100%, on this strip
Sprayed a strip west of path with R+ AS.  Mostly headed out.  7/23 good kill, 100%, on this strip.

7/23.    Mowed G1,2,3,4,5,6.  RU on D 1,2,3 and E 7,8,9. and F 1,2,3. RU+ AS on D 4,5,6 and C 4,5,6.
     J 1,2,3 and J 4,5,6 show considerable regrowth.  At this stage would rate kill at 70%.
     A 1,2,3 and A 4,5,6 are 100% killed. 
     A 7,8,9 and F 7,8,9 show slight regrowth  kill approximately90% no difference with AS.
     Sprayed strip on South side where RCG is vigorous with RU.  Adjacent to 6/13 test strip.
     Sprayed strip West of Path with RU+AS adjacent to 6/13 test strip.

Note that much of the RCG that has not been sprayed is beginning to senesce and has not flowered.  Much is only 1’high.
Unmowed plots that were sprayed in April, both RU and RU+AS, show significant regrowth, approx. 30%.  Would require retreatment to achieve reasonable control.
Plots mowed in April and sprayed in May show very little regrowth and at this point would be considered to be fully controlled.  RU plots had 15 sprouts and RU+AS approx. 8.
Unmowed plots sprayed in May had good control, RU 100% and RU+AS 80% (due to incomplete coverage at application)
Plots mowed in May and sprayed in June are completely controlled (100%)
Unmowed plots sprayed in June are completely controlled.  A few (4-6) blades still show some green but appear to be dying.

7/24 sprayed at Adrian’s

Mowed C 1,2,3 and H 1,2,3.  RCG is not very vigorous.
Mowed a patch in more vigorous growth area.
Sprayed G 1,2,3: F 4,5,6 and G 7,8,9 with RU
Sprayed B 1,2,3: G 4,5,6 and D 7,8,9 with RU+AS
Sprayed strip on South side with RU

9/10  Sprayed at Adrian’s, missed repeat coverage so most treatment is very light.
