Habitat Characteristics
Common in dry, sunny, weedy pastures & waste areas. It is often found at the foot of walls or rocks and often on roadsides. It is becoming more common in Western Washington.
Identification
This annual or biennial weed grows up to 3 feet tall. The stems (one or several from the base) are erect and branched and contain a milky juice. Leaves are alternate, smooth, and coarsely lobed or toothed. Stem leaves are deeply lobed and have bases that clasp the stem. Yellow ray flowers, about 1/2 inch in diameter, are produced on long stalks at tips of branches.
Life History
Smooth hawksbeard reproduces by windblown seed. Flowers are present in late spring and summer.
Management
Since this weed is fairly new to the area, it has not been tested for control with herbicides.
