Historical SWD Research Reports

WSU Whatcom County Extension has worked to understand the life cycle of Spotted Wing Drosophila and how to reduce its impact on berry growers from 2011 to 2013. In 2011 and 2012, fields were scouted in Western Washington raspberry and blueberry fields to determine first emergence of SWD and timing of population growth. In 2013, trials were done to look at different types of traps and baits for scouting as well as to investigate the effect of attractants to increase the efficacy of a pesticide. Reports from all three years are below.

2011 Spotted Wing Drosophila First Occurrence


This time lapse video illustrates the first occurrence of SWD in Western Washington raspberry and blueberry fields. Traps are shown on a map and highlighted when SWD were first found in that field.
