YOUTH GARDENING PROGRAMS - SUMMER 2009

The program will be open to youth with a special focus on classes and events for children
ages 4-10. The program will consist of both fee-based classes and free events. Adults are
asked to accompany children thereby promoting an intergenerational gardening connection.

All lessons will be participatory in nature with an emphasis on gardening practices that are
both research-based and earth-friendly.

• Pot a Plant at the Master Gardener Plant Sale
Saturday, May 2 • 9am - 2pm

• Once Upon a Time in the Garden
July 10 • 7pm - 8pm
August 21 • 7pm - 8pm
Stories for the whole family to be followed by milk
and cookies. Bring your own chairs or blankets.

• Ribbon Cutting & Ice Cream Social
Sunday, August 9 • 2pm - 4pm

• Pumpkin Day
Saturday, October 10 • 9am - Noon
Pick out a pumpkin and tour the Children’s Story Garden.


FEE-BASED PROGRAM

The Veggie Patrol: With the help of the Master Gardeners, children and adults
will meet twice monthly (late May to early October) to plant, maintain, and
harvest vegetables in the Children’s Story Garden. The fee includes ten lessons,
one hour each, on topics listed below with projects that can be taken home:

• Plant Parts and What We Eat
• Reading a Seed Packet
• Making Worm Bins* and Composting
• Creative Container Planting*
• Scarecrow Workshop*
• Bug Buddies
• Bees and their Business
• Propagation
(growing new plants from old)*
• Harvest and Stone Soup Party
*Project can be taken home!

$30/child, $40/family • Limited Enrollment • Scholarships Available
