The
Master Gardener Foundation of Whatcom County has been established
to provide the public with educational information about home horticulture.
Membership is open to all those who have successfully completed
their Master Gardener training and the volunteer service necessary
to become certified as Master Gardeners.
In
addition to serving the public through such activities as the maintenance
of the demonstration garden at Hovander Homestead Park, the Foundation
also offers lectures to community groups, and home gardening advice
to individuals.
The
Foundation provides its members with a variety of opportunities
for advanced studies in subjects ranging from grafting and pruning
to constructing moss baskets and hyper-tufa containers. The Foundation
brings noted speakers from throughout the Northwest and sponsors
field trips to a variety of arboretums, botanical gardens, and
test plots. Among the most popular activities are the summer tours
of members' home gardens throughout Whatcom County.
The
Foundation's major fundraiser is the very popular plant sale held
at Hovander every May.
